Vienna and Beyond
Georgie West The wife, the Woman
Gustav Mahler Songs of a Wayfarer (soprano Arielle Loewinger)
Joseph Haydn, Symphony no. 104 in D, The London Symphony
The Bailey Chamber Orchestra give an afternoon concert of music connected to Vienna, beginning with a commission by Durham student Georgie West. The wife, the Woman is inspired by Alma Mahler and explores her work as a composer and her life married to one of Vienna’s most famous residents at the turn of the twentieth century. Second year soprano Arielle Loewinger turns to the music of Alma’s husband Gustav Mahler. His Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (Songs of a Wayfarer) charts the protagonist’s unrequited love in one of the most beautiful and devastating song cycles in the repertoire. The orchestra end with Vienna coming to London – Joseph Haydn’s joyous last symphony, No 104 – ‘The London symphony’.
