O Great Beyond
Durham University Chamber Choir, directed by Arielle Loewinger, explore themes of love, death and eternity through a range of works by British, German and American composers.
The first half explores the journey through mortality and remembrance, reflecting on loss through sacred works by Cecilia McDowall, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Kenneth Leighton and Ethel Smyth, whilst the beauty of farewells is captured in contemporary compositions by Richard Rodney Bennett and Healey Willan. The second half moves on to themes of love, centred around Thomas LaVoy’s deeply moving piece ‘O Great Beyond’, which sets texts from ‘The Gardener’, a collection of verse by the Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore.
The concert takes place in the Chapter House at Durham Cathedral
