Daniel Cook plays La Nativité du Seigneur by Olivier Messiaen, an extraordinary meditation for organ on the theme of Christ’s Nativity. In nine movements, Messiaen uses all the colours and range of the organ to reflect on the Christmas story and God’s purpose, with vivid depictions of the Virgin, the child, the shepherds and the angels and climaxing in the mighty and awe-inspiring attempt to express the inexpressible concept of God being amongst us, ‘Dieu parmi nous’.
