Fauré and Duruflé Requiems
Lottie Craven, soprano
Benjamin Noble, baritone
Daniel Cook, organ
Durham Choral Society perform two masterpieces of French sacred choral music, the Requiem settings by Gabriel Fauré and Maurice Duruflé, both accompanied by Daniel Cook on Durham Cathedral’s organ. Fauré wrote that his requiem setting ‘expressed a human faith in eternal rest’ and avoided setting some of the more hellfire and judgement texts that we’re familiar with from settings by Mozart and Verdi. Duruflé’s requiem very closely follow’s Fauré’s model and also draws heavily on traditional plainchant melodies.
