Beethoven’s Eroica
Overture in C – Fanny Hensel
Trumpet Concerto in Eb – Johann Nepomuk Hummel – Soloist Tom Parker
Symphony No.3 “Eroica” – Ludwig Van Beethoven
Under the direction of Max Brambley, Durham University Classical Ensemble begin their Epiphany term concert with Fanny Hensel’s scintillating Overture in C, the only purely orchestral work she ever wrote, and which was never published during her lifetime. Johann Nepomuk Hummel’s trumpet concerto was written for the keyed trumpet inventor and virtuoso Anton Weidinger and marked the composer’s entrance into the Eterházy court. Beethoven’s Third Symphony was originally dedicated to Napoleon, who was then a heroic democratic figure. He later removed it in anger when Napoleon declared himself emperor but the ‘Eroica’ title remained. Heroic themes prevail throughout the symphony, regarded as the first Romantic symphony and one of the greatest ever written.
