The Voices of Nations
In their Michaelmas Term concert, the Durham University’s Orchestral Society symphony orchestra takes in a tour of Europe with music celebrating national identity. Jean Sibelius’ Finlandia and Bedřich Smetana’s Vltava from Má Vlast both evoke vast and majestic landscapes as symbols of national pride. Augusta Holmès looks back to her Irish origins in Irlande, another symphonic poem which calls for political freedom. The orchestra end with Alexander Borodin’s Second Symphony, generally regarded as his best work and a foundation stone of the Russian symphonic sound, weaves elements of Russian folklore with Western Romanticism.
